Definition of fuzzy set theory

- [Instructor] With these new applications of the fuzzy set theory, the movement from a paper to a well accepted theory was inevitable. Dr. Zadeh made huge strides with his definition of fuzzy logic and this new theory could now bridge the gap between humans and computers. If computers can think about things in a mathematical and logical fashion, and humans have an edge of ambiguity, this new theory would allow computers to think with a sense of ambiguity as well. If we want an example of what exactly a fuzzy set looks like, we could survey and gather some data. So let's say we want to know what is middle-aged? If we surveyed 100 people about what age middle-age starts and ends at, we might end up with a definite majority, resulting in middle-age starting at 35 and middle-age ending at 55. Therefore, we could say that between the age 35 and 55, is considered middle-age. Of course, there's no scientific need to know this information, unless there is an insurance or research question…
