The fixed wireless access (FWA) services from T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T have been enormously popular, but there's a ceiling to the sector's growth. Finding it is a challenge.
Maxis will begin deploying the fiber network infrastructure in Penang in the third quarter of 2025, a project that will take 18 to 36 months to complete.
Maxis is poised to initiate a significant fiber network infrastructure deployment in the Malaysian state of Penang in the third quarter of this year, with the objective of connecting over 100,000 homes by 2027.
The Malaysian telecommunications operator has announced its plans to deploy a fiber-optic network across all districts of Penang. This initiative will encompass high-demand urban areas such as Jelutong, Georgetown, Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru, as well as key locations on the mainland.
"We have been working closely with the state government on this for a couple of years and we are excited to now move into the implementation phase," Maxis CEO Goh Seow Eng told reporters last week at the launch of Maxis Home Fibre in Penang. He added that the fiber rollout will take between 18 and 36 months to complete, and that the enhanced infrastructure will be scalable to speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s.
In an official statement, Maxis said establishing its own fiber network will provide the company with complete oversight of its service quality, ensuring rapid, dependable and secure connectivity for its customers.
Maxis currently operates a fiber network spanning over 23,000km across the country, with the capacity to serve more than half a million homes. The company's self-built fiber infrastructure is complemented by fiber access through other infrastructure providers, which expands the accessibility of its services nationwide.
The Malaysian telecommunications operator noted that the expansion of its fiber network in Penang was enabled by the recent implementation of the Last Mile Connectivity Guidelines by the Penang State Government.
The first-of-its-kind initiative streamlines pole-sharing policies, allowing telecommunications providers to deploy fiber networks across the state more quickly and efficiently.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Maxis' fiber expansion initiative is aligned with the Penang2030 vision to build a "smart, green and inclusive state."
"High-quality Internet connectivity is a critical driver for education, talent development and economic growth, all of which will further solidify Penang's position as a regional hub for technology and innovation," Chow said in a statement. "We will continue strengthening our state's digital infrastructure to close the digital divide and ensure every resident of Penang is equipped to prosper in the future economy."
