Eastern Michigan University Nearing Completion of Major Security Upgrades

Eastern Michigan University Nearing Completion of Major Security UpgradesEastern Michigan University is nearing completion on a $485,000 upgrade of security cameras and the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) around its campus. The camera installations are expected to be completed in November, when several more upgrades will be announced.

“The security upgrades reflect our continued efforts to maintain a safe campus,” said EMU spokesman Geoff Larcom in one report.

EMU currently has more than 500 surveillance cameras on campus, and the upgrades will put cameras in 10 more buildings as well as AEDs in 17 buildings.

The university is also increasing the amount of lighting around campus with 100 LED lights in two projects that total $273,000.

On top of these upgrades, a renovation to the public safety office will create room for 10 new police officers to be hired for the university’s police force.

The recent homicides of two EMU students lead to a budget increase for security upgrades and other improvements around campus.
