Tests are not detected if using version > 1.8.2.1

I have configured in my gradle.build the following relevant configs:

testRuntimeOnly("org.junit.vintage:junit-vintage-engine:5.11.4")

Other relevant versions:

8.8.1

Now, with the version 1.8.2.1 everything works as expected, but whenever I update to any subsequent version and run the tests using AS (either gradlew testDebugUnitTest) or by clicking one the UI buttons, I keep getting in Android Studio: "Test events were not received" and there's no error in the console output. I'm out of ideas of why I am unable to update the plugin version.
I have tried upgrading the plugin every time a new AS version goes out or a new Gradle version, but nothing has helped.
